TUMORS

The tumor or less commonly neoplasia (from the greek neo, new, and Plas, training), or if cancer is malignant, belongs to a class of diseases characterized by uncontrolled reproduction some body cells, which cease to respond to the mechanisms physiological control of cellular damage as a result of their genetic heritage. A cell to become cancerous is crazy, that there must be an error in the system that controls its reproduction. All cancer cells and precancerous are in fact very extensive alterations of their set of chromosomes (karyotype ): the number of chromosomes present in their nucleus is disrupted and the chromosomes themselves are damaged, missing or multiple

Econometric analysis of deaths from cancer (2)

THE ITALIAN TERRITORY cancers
An analysis by the newspaper "L'Espresso" confirms the common perception: the continuous spread of leukemia and tumors in the Italian territory. Over the past two decades cancer increased by 40%. The same journal states that "the figures are arrived at by epidemic": the breast cancer increased by 27%, those to the brain by 10%, and liver by 20%. Impressive figures that did not spare the children, just think that in Piedmont in the last twenty years, the incidence rate of cancer in children has increased 1.3% per year. Nevertheless, the cancer can affect people of any age, even though statistics say that older people are affected more frequently because they tend to accumulate genetic damage over time. The growth of the disease is detected a little 'everywhere in Italy, as yet there was a real and definite cause that is the basis of the harmful effects of cancer. The areas most at risk in Italy often correspond to areas adjacent to industrial plants and nuclear or coincide with the large metropolitan areas where the smog generated by road traffic and heating systems in particular, increases the incidence of lung cancers.
That is why I decided to make a statistical analysis that took into account the number of cancer deaths in the Italian territory and compare it with other indexes of those who, in my opinion, can best be summarized in the causes of this phenomenon destructive.

DATA ANALYSIS
This paper aims to analyze the distribution of cancer mortality in the Italian regions and then switch to a more specific analysis by province. The data on mortality, population and data on major causes of death were taken from the ISTAT database online in 2003. Overall, we see a great variability in cancer mortality between the North and South of the country, which we analyze in more detail in the data of each region. I have therefore decided to analyze through statistical inference which could be the cause that he was the most important basis for continued tumor growth. Certainly, the causes can not be analyzed in their entirety because they are so high that the causes, known or otherwise, which could lead to the birth of cancer. Therefore I analyzed in the first instance the number of deaths throughout the country, first by region, by province and then I subsequently analyzed the information and compares the most important causes: income per capita abundance of elderly individuals and placement of nuclear power plants.
3.1 The cancer mortality
The first variable that I have taken into consideration and that which is centered around the statistical analysis is the number of cancer deaths. To this end, I collected data [1] on the resident population and the number of cancer deaths for every Italian region and compare the data from each region I analyzed a mortality rate for every ten thousand inhabitants: Deaths due to cancer / (Popolazione/10000). You can analyze the data obtained in the following table.
[1] Istat Source: Database of 2003.
A brief analysis of the data shows that the national average of cancer deaths (46), calculated on the number of deaths per ten thousand inhabitants, is exceeded by far in regions that are in the north of Italy: Lombardia (50) , California (53.7), Friuli Venezia Giulia (55.9), Emilia Romagna (55.4), Liguria (60.4), etc. ... While in the south
estimates of mortality are significantly lower: Campania (37.9), Basilicata (36.6), Puglia (37.7), California (36.8), etc. ...
This supports the view again and exhorts us to continue in the statistical analysis so as to bring out the causes of these geographical anomalies.
In this chapter reference is made to the regional data to make it clear analysis of the values. Later, in the chapter on statistical regression, it will prey into account data on a provincial basis, viewed in the tables at the end of this work, to make more precise and specific statistical analysis.

3.2 Income per capita
The second variable considered is the income per capita for each Italian region. The choice of this variable is derived from an analysis published by the Corriere della Sera [1] second where cancer deaths are higher in developed countries and regions in developing areas. This derives from the result that the high standard of living can lead to excess is feeding both in the abuse of any type of property: alcohol, cigarettes, luxury goods are harmful to health, etc ... in addition to structures less suited to the diagnosis and treatment of cancers.
[1] Corriere della Sera, December 19, 2007.
A preliminary analysis of data is a certain analogy between the incomes of the more developed regions, located in northern Italy, and the number of deaths.
As in the previous section in the north have an average income exceeding the national average, approximately € 19,300: Texas (22,800), Trentino Alto Adige (26 511), Veneto (22,457), Friuli Venezia Giulia (22,946), etc. ... While in the south incomes are much lower: Puglia (13,427), Calabria ( 12,763), Sicily (13,647), Campania (13,752), etc. ...

3.3 Number of elderly
Another variable considered in the statistical analysis is the number of over -65 inside the territory under consideration. This decision stems from a particular propensity of the elderly population to diseases arising from poor tumor difese immunitarie presenti nell’organismo e dall’accumularsi dei danni genetici con il passare degli anni.

The extent of damage depends, first, the dose of radiation, and secondly, from the organ affected, which may be viable or nonviable, and finally the type of cellular damage: a cell can be destroyed completely affected, or may be altered without being destroyed, in which case there is the possibility that the active process of abnormal proliferation that is at the origin of carcinogenesis or any other form of cancer.
The next chapter is entirely devoted to the analysis because nuclear is not a statistically objective variables such as previous but needs some mathematical analysis for its consideration.

ITALY IN THE NUCLEAR

Throughout the country there are five nuclear power plants, eight storage of radioactive and six reactors, each of which contains more of the radioactive material inside because Italy has not yet been found a place to store the waste.
Nuclear power plants that are present in Italy are: §
Caorso, (10) [1] near Piacenza, the largest in Italy. It was off with the 1987 referendum on the inside is still home to all radioactive materials (1880 187t of radioactive waste and irradiated fuel);
§ Garigliano (10) in the province Caserta, closed since 1978 when a failure of a steam generator did not allow the reopening since most no longer economically viable. Part of the waste has been transferred to England (to which Italy still continues to pay rent for their store), others were buried under the ground in plastic bags unconsciously during the sixties, creating irreparable damage to the flora and wildlife and the remainder are still in the middle (2500 to radioactive wastes), §
Three, (7) in the province of Vercelli, who has worked for thirteen years and only stopped the remaining years for extraordinary maintenance. It has within it all again il suo cuore radioattivo (780 di scorie radioattive e 15t di combustibile irraggiato);

§ Saluggia, (7) in provincia di Vercelli;

§ Guanzate, (5) in provincia di Como;
§ Udine, (5);
§ Forlì, (5);
§ Taranto, (5);

§ Legnaro, (6) in provincia di Padova;

Econometric Analysis deaths from cancer (5)

Depending on the radioactive content of each plant, storage or reactor (cubic meters of radioactive material and tons of spent fuel), I set an index of radioactivity, which I indicated on the table with "Rad" [1] and I have previously listed in parentheses next to each nuclear site. Through this index and the distance of the radioactive site closest I found the ratio of radioactivity in the province, indicated by "Coeff. R "according to the following formula: Coeff. = R (1 - Dist.Cent. / 400) * Rad.
The distance from the site's radioactive as the denominator 400 km as far apart as possible on the Italian territory, and how far apart they may fade the effects of radioactivity.
An example may make it more understandable to the formula above: consider for this analysis, the first province in the list, Agrigento. It has a minimum distance of 49.5 km from most radioactive site near the reactor in Palermo, which has an index of radioactivity 5. With the above-mentioned formula the coefficient of radioactivity will be: (1-49.5/400) * 5 = 4.38. This means that although the province of Agrigento not present on its territory any material resulting from nuclear fission, is contaminated by the presence of a reactor at about 50 km from its borders.
In the second set of data, however, have shown plants, warehouses or reactors in each province by multiplying them by their index of radioactivity in order to have a coefficient of radioactivity in the whole province. Through the latter
and the ratio of radioactivity found previously have generated a ratio of total radioactivity in each province and on the presence or absence of radioactive deposits in the territory considered as a coefficient of radioactivity resulting from the distance to the nearest site radioactive. (See Table 6).
cite an example in relation to the province of Vercelli, which hosts on its territory the nuclear power plant of Trino and storage of radioactive waste with both index of radioactivity equal to 7, beyond that it is only 82 km from the reactor of Voghera, in the province of Pavia. To indicate that the province was only a rough index, therefore the value of both sites was added a coefficient of radioactivity found with the formula for the distance indicated above, equal to 3.97. In this way the province has a total coefficient equal to 17.97. By analyzing the mortality data in this province I have found that its death rate for cancer deaths is equal to 52.4, well above the national average of 46. The data lead us to proceed with regression analysis to capture the actual causes of cancer mortality.

Econometric Analysis of the deaths from cancer (6)

statistical regression

The objective of this study is to develop an econometric model that lead me to estimate the relationship between the number of deaths due to cancer, the per capita income, the number of elderly people and the displacement of radioactive material on the Italian territory. I will use that data reported by banks are partly Istat data for 2003 and part of me generated according to a report given by the above, and also based on statistical data.
The econometric model developed is a multiple linear regression, which allowed me to estimate the effect on the dependent variable Y of a variation of three independent variables X1, X2 and X3.

Therefore, those variables associated with I: YN °
deaths due to cancer in ten thousand people [dead]
X1 Income per capita [income]
X2 N-65 ° of over ten thousand inhabitants [Seniors]
X3 Total coefficient of radioactivity resulting from
presence in the territory of Central, deposits or more reactors
of radioactivity in the index based on distance [ Coeff. Total]

OLS to estimate the coefficients B1, B2, B3, B4, errors and goodness of regression I used the package Stata / SE 10.0.

Therefore, the estimated regression function is:

The regression R2 indicates the proportion of the sample variance of Y explained by the repressors Xi, varying between zero and one. Regression analysis shows that having a R2 = 0.7187, the independent variables explain much of the variability in Y. Furthermore, the three independent variables jointly participate in the determination of the dependent variable, which we can see from the regression coefficients.
For a more careful analysis we consider the t test for testing hypotheses, and thus the value of the t-statistic will allow us to reject the null hypothesis or not. Therefore, the regression analysis we note that the value of the t test is more consistent with the number of elderly in that area which, showing a value of 11.22. The income will allow us to reject the null hypothesis because the t-statistic is equal to 4:58, the same is not true for the presence of radioactive material on the Italian territory, with a value of 1.11 that we would not reject the null hypothesis to a minimum level of 1.96. It may help to decompose the effects of this regressive regression analysis combining different variables observed previously

OTHER REGRESSION

For a comprehensive overview of the effect that variables have reported mortality due to cancer, I considered appropriate to set various regression statistics, to see how to change variable changes the output of the regression. So, besides the variables mentioned in the previous chapter I have introduced two new variables, "distance" and "central". They are not real "new" variables because the latter is originated by the variable considered in the previous chapter "Coeff. Total ". I thought it appropriate, therefore, consider both the summary variable that the two original separately.
The following table shows the regressions are more significant for a greater understanding of the final output.

6.1 Before regression
For the first analysis I have considered the two main variables of the effects of radioactivity to see how the presence of nuclear power reactors or deposits in the province and the closest distance to the adjacent province can affect mortality [1] .
From this analysis it is clear, noting the extent of '= 0.1692, that the variables do not explain well the variability of the dependent variable. Evaluating the coefficients of regression certainly distance has a negative sign because it is inversely proportional to the impact of radiation on cancer mortality decreases as the distance increases the effect of the radioactivity man.
the plant's presence in the region certainly has a relationship with the output but does not affect much on it, it shows the t-statistic very close to zero.

6.2 seconds
In the second regression analysis, I used as an independent variable the coefficient value resulting from the two variables listed above, to have a real effect in each province, for two variables to consider separately might be an understatement.
The output of this regression is noted that the effect of the presence of radioactive material on the Italian territory is not particularly relevant to the determination of the effect on the dependent variable. It actually has a little higher than shown above, not explicit, therefore, a particular dependence on mortality. This analysis was intended to verify if the synthesis of the old variables in a single variable could eliminate any effects arising from discursive analysis of the two separate. But it was found that is not the reason that leads us not to accept as the most reliable, such as explanatory variables in mortality from cancer.

6.3 Third regression
In this analysis I wanted to analyze, as in the main regression, all variables taken into account, but I replaced the variable summarizing the total coefficient with the two generations, to see if the summary in one variable had created distortions in 'output.
From the regression did not suggest major differences with the main regression, synonymous with a good summary in a single variable but not a great dependence of the dependent variable from two variables (distance and power). Analyzing the t-statistic of the four variables we notice a slight scaling for the variables "income" and "elderly" in favor of the remaining variables, but certainly not so substantial as to change the final decision.

6.4 Fourth regression
In this regression I thought it appropriate to analyze the effects of radioactivity, measured by a single factor, with the variable of income, to see more effects of the combination of variables taken into account.
This analysis shows a high dependence on income, showing a very high value of the t-statistic. Unlike the value of the t-statistic, the coefficient for the variable total, there would not reject a hypothesis nothing.

6.5 Fifth
regression analysis I considered the latter as it can change the output analysis of the total coefficient approached the variable "old" and because the presence of radioactivity and the number of elderly in the Italian territory affect the output of the regression.
from this final regression, we can confirm the findings derived from the first regression: coefficient of radioactivity in the course of the analysis, the value of the t-statistic higher, but certainly the same statistics for the number of elderly is much more important. This analysis, the significance dell’ , è certamente la più significativa dopo l’analisi principale.
6.5 Sintesi regressioni
Al termine di tale lavoro ho ritenuto opportuno sintetizzare i dati ottenuti nelle precedenti regressioni in un'unica tabella utilizzando, dopo ogni regressione, i seguenti comandi di Stata:
estimates store first
estimates store second
estimates store third
estimates store fourth
estimates Store Fifth

and finally enclosing the previous commands in a table through:
Estimates table first second third fourth fifth

The table thus obtained can be observed at the end of this work in Appendix 2.
[1] The results of the regression, as for later, they were listed and summarized at the end of this work in Appendix 1.

Econometric Analysis of the deaths from cancer (8)

CONCLUSIONS The analysis reveals that the three variables (number of elderly per capita income and ratio of radioactivity) jointly contribute explication final output.
The variable of greatest significance is the number of elderly people in the area selected and confirmed as stated in the analysis published in the Corriere della Sera. Seniority means a high exposure to the development of cancer, genetic damage because they tend to proliferate over the years. Is not negligible, on the other hand, consideration of the standard of living of individuals, being also an influential variable in the consideration of the final output. This result was generated by the excessive use of food, cigarettes, alcohol, etc. .. and by the proliferation of industrial zones in provinces with high density di popolazione, il cui reddito è sicuramente maggiore rispetto alle zone rurali.
Suffice it to say that the variability comes from a mix of elements such as moving more of the winds, migration, security of all radioactive site, sorting of radioactive waste, etc. ...
The specific study of the variable observed, may be subject to further work which it considers in its determination all its peculiarity.
